Does anyone know where I could get a heat lamp to hang over the water to stop it freezing. OH is willing to pay to have it running as he is worried about the girls getting cold !

You may find the heat from an ordinary 40w bulb may be enough to stop it freezing. They give off quite a bit of heat.

How are you going to fix it Nisi? Remember heat rises so underneath would probably be better if there is a way of doing it. Is your waterer under cover? Otherwise you'll have to have some protection from rain etc.

Good luck & lets have a pic when you've set it up! Smile

I was thinking of a proper heat lamp which radiates heat downwards. It is under cover and they already have a light so it would be easy to rig another one.

I haven't heard of Countrywide but I will google it.

I have read of an method of putting a 'night light' candle underneath the (metal) water container and putting a square of bricks around the candle for the water to stand on thus preventing the chickens from getting burnt. But those little candles don't burn for more than a couple of hours and the thought of all that straw and wood shavings ....... seems too much of a risk.

But maybe I could do the same but with a light bulb, hmmmm,

I'll let you know of any progress I make !
