|
|
The water in our chook's drinker in the run froze solid last night.
We've not bought ACV yet - does it have the added side effect of being an antifreeze?
The laydees got warm water in the drinker and warmed up left over Jordans and Sugar puffs (only a few of the latter) and loved it!
What else would we need to do to keep the chooks warm - can they cope with the predicted -18oC temps this winter?
Should we put polystyrene lining in the coop (which was made of what looks like 8mm tongue and groove)? |

| It's seems to make it freeze less hard, but not totally. There is another thread where we showed our new solution - basically, a mini hot water tank jacket out of foil backed bubble wrap. That worked very well last night! |

| Don't use polystyrene unless it is well covered - your chickens will eat it! |

"Radiator foil" top hat - good idea. Will give it a go! Thread at http://forums.thepoultrykeeper.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=39622#39622
How do chickens take to the cold snaps? Will I need to insulate the coop or just allow them more straw?
As to the porridge - are we talking bog standard breakfast porridge with the dash of salt and sugar or are you naughty and give them it them after smothering it in golden syrup?!!!!
At the mo mine love what the toddlers leave behind - nuked for 30 secs! Jordans, Shreddies, Sugar puffs etc |

It's ok - the hats are only put on at night when we have put the girls to bed. Once they are out, the hats are taken off. |

Yup, and just for the waterers. Hadn't thought of turning the chicken coup into a special effect from Blakes 7, but it's an idea... |

mine now live in a shed with the goats so i just put extra straw around the buckets i use and the water is changed
every morning and evening ,+ they have it warmed the goats like their water about the temp we would have our tea so it seems ok ,love the space ship idea
but think the goats would eat it ,they are working on destroying oh coat at the moment although only when i'm milking
