So far I've found
this
about a show being cancelled at the weekend because of an EU directive.
| Quote: | | Countryside Live, which takes place on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate, was due to host pigeon classes on Saturday and poultry classes on Sunday. Since the concerns regarding avian flu, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, which organises the event, has been in contact with DEFRA and has now received the directive which states that on a risk basis, the Deputy Chief Veterinary Office has decided not to allow the two sections to go ahead. The EU has implemented an immediate ban on all shows, markets, fairs and sales involving collections of birds across the EU. |
That's still not clear to me. If the EU (and assuming the UK is part of the EU) has implemented an immediate ban, then that's NOW - not Friday
Or does "across the EU" mean between different countries?
And where does that leave taking a sick bird 3 miles down the road to a vets?????? |

| If this is going to happen then I think it means that you will probably have to call the vet out to you to see your girl ~ ensuring that he carries out all the correct isolation procedures ~ wellie washing etc. |

| I'll be happier when I see this on Defra, it's bound to have caveats etc attached. I've never known an official notice that didn't. |

More just released on the BBC
| Quote: | Ministers are to introduce new measures to try to prevent a bird flu pandemic breaking out, Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett has told MPs.
Full details would follow "within days". In the meantime, bird fairs, markets and shows will be banned unless experts declare them safe. |

Continuing as it's just updated:
| Quote: | Mrs Beckett told MPs she planned to introduce "within the coming days, sensible and measured regulations, which will assist us in reducing the risk of disease and strengthening our ability to control an outbreak".
A register of commercial poultry producers would be established, she said, and the possibility of keeping poultry indoors was being urgently discussed with the industry. |

She also said, though it doesn't seem to be mentioned there
That domestic poultry keepers should be able to get a leaflet soon detailing what they need to do to protect their birds
These will be available in Vets and also sent out with poultry magazines |

I may go and see them at Thorne's tomorrow, I am out that way, and find out from them what they reckon!! They have put a lot of money and effort into the stock they have at the moment, I hope they have sold most of it!! Same goes for all the others too, like Rob in the New Forest and Colin at 2 Pots etc!!! |

I think from what I have been reading from all the links that maybe the story isn't quite as it appears. I see from other sources that the import of birds is now banned and also movement of poultry to markets and to shows. That seems logical mass poultry movement from all over the country to just one place should be avoided to acoid the risk of spreading the disease IF it gets here. It's not here yet and I think maybe we humble backyard people may be able to move our birds ~ like going to the vets etc. I certainly hope that's how it will be.
There was a doctor on our local radio station talking about it today and he was saying the last time anything like this came here was in 1891 I think, and we've been waiting ever since for the next one. He also said it wasn't something to get really worked up about as the people who had died from this illness actually virtually lived with their birds and their health care standards could not be compared to ours. He felt that if we maintain good hygiene standards (regular hand washing etc) that we are in a much better position to avoid the illness ourselves. He said that if we contracted the flu then yes we would be sick for a while, but the second it attacked us our antibodies would start to grow to fight it and by 10 days we would have a whole army of antibodies defending our bodies. I can't remember the whole thing (it's times like this you wish you had a tape in the deck) ~ but there was a lot to do with our advances in medicine etc that they don't have over in Asia and that he felt it had all been blown out of proportion. I liked him!!! I felt a little easier after that, but still concerned. I think we have to wait patiently until tomorrow and then we will know what is in store for our girls. |

| That's what the chap who did the talk at Thornes said Summayah - about the people who had died and how they lived a completely different lifestyle, living practically on top of their birds with very little hygiene. |

Yes, I think it has been blown out of all proportion and unfortunately, not sure that DEFRA will go with that. I hope they do.
