I was out on the golf course with the OH this week and he produced a ham sandwich when I was peckish. It was really yummy, so I said. 'Delicious, whats on it' His reply with a big smile, 'Your green tom chutney'!!! YUMO!!!
It hasn't been a month since I made it, he never realized this, the rule in our house seems to be, if its in the fridge its edible! It was so tasty. So thanks Heather for the receipe! |

Glad you like it B !
Sadly I won't be able to make any this year unless I can persuade the farm shop to sell me some green toms - all my plants got blight while I was away only trouble with outdoor ones
Have just picked a whole preserving pan of Green figs off my mum's tree though and a load of rosehips nearly ready and hopefully my BIL will have some damsons in the freezer for me so that's a good start !
I'll have to have a look and see if there is any elder left - I went away at the wrong time of year really ! |

I made half the receipe, as I never had enough tomatoes for the whole thing. It made me 2 jars.
Not sure how long it will keep, don't usually have that problem. But as it should stay unopened for a month before eating, I would have guessed it would last 4-6 months. |

Depends on your size jar! it says it makes about 3lbs (1.5kg)
If you want another recipe (if there are some left over ) I have one for green tomato and orange jam though i've never made that one
the chutney will keep for 1 yr unopened - once opened keep in fridge |

I have quite a few preserving books - so if anyone has a glut of something / sees it on special in the supermarket just shout
the best one IMO is Preserving by Oded Schwartz ISBN 0-7513-0345-3 gives almost every sort of preserving method - including cures for smoking and drying meat . fish etc |

ooooooh don't tempt me Nanny P we'll have to get our new larder built at this rate !!
Probably an american book becuase of the canning bit - though think you can order pressure canners from the states . Some ingredients you might not be able to find but I love measuring in cups - so easy |

I was about to say, "But when is a cup a cup?", and of course, I realise it doesn't matter as long it's the same cup
I will come back to this recipe section when I move to France. I'll have the time and the space to keep all these lovely jars. Maybe a Cave and I'm gradually building up my supply of Kilner Jars from Ebay |
