There were two trios of Indian Game Bantams at Carlisle Sale on Saturday and I completely and utterly fell in love with them. They went for £25 and £30 but I managed to restrain myself from bidding as I'm supposed to be concentrating on Marans .......... and possibly Rhode Island Reds.
But they were such beautiful birds to look at and I wondered if anyone on here had any experience of them they could share with me? I've read the books that say they lay very few eggs, are difficult to breed and are very hardy, but I'm more interested in their temperament ........... particulary how "game-like" the cockerals are!! I had an OEG bantam cockeral who wouldn't tolerate any other males in his territory and am not too keen to repeat that experience! |

Hi DC, I've always understood Indian/Cornish Game to be the same breed.
These are some of mine, do they look like the birds you saw for sale as Indian Game. The white pullet is the jubilee colouring.
My plan was to cross the hens with a Dorking to make a big table bird but now I'm afraid they will look too Dorking like and I will not be able to cull them so will leave them as straight Indian/ Cornish Game.

Hi Jan
they are
just known by different names there are different variants of colour, the dark are the best with the beautiful greeny sheen.Like the handsome bird on the right.Got some good legs on them to.Crossed with Dorking they make good tasting meat birds. They always look really ferocious but they are actually very nice birds.

They are gorgeous aren't they! I think handsome rather than pretty and definitely on my wish list.
Hugh FW crossed Indian (Cornish) Game with Dorking, Wyandotte and something else to find the best meat bird and I think the Dorking cross was best - I'll have to watch that River Cottage episode again to check though. |

It was the Dorking DC , but people have been doing it well before HFW did.
I like Ixworth taste but the legs are very tough if you dont restict their range a while before eating.

They do have a very cruel expression but are nice birds and are very quiet. I like the dark best as well. I have a jubilee cockerel but I think he is going at Christmas along with some of the others.
I'm going to keep the one we call ' The Big Bugger ' and the two best hens for breeding. |

the Jubilee are quite unusual but as in all birds you have to be realistic you cant keep everything.Rare breeds are hard to sell on as they are not over popular except to real enthusiasts so many people are'nt aware of their good qualities.Indian/cornish having that 'mean as hell' look doesnt do them any favours
