definitely worth a go - it takes so little time, isn't difficult and look at the rewards you get for their hard work. If I were you I'd wait till spring now though and ask around for a swarm.

Have you got national hives (square boxes) or WBC (the traditional image with the sloped sides)

They look like the national hives......Theyre quite old and just been left in an orchard for a few years.......either need fixing up, or I can take one apart to see how to construct one myself......Dont worry, I wont be rushing into it tho'.........maybe look at the hives thru winter & see what I can do with them ???

I use the winter to repair/build equipment. The bees won't be up to much till mid April now, so it's the ideal time. I'm going to be feeding mine this weekend and then that's pretty much it for this year.

They eat the nectar and pollen from the fields and gardens during the spring, summer, and early autumn, and eat their stores (or sugar syrup they've been given) over the winter and early spring.

^^ what he said Wink

I feed sugar syrup just to make sure they have enough stores to get through the winter. More bees die through starvation than through the cold.

The British Beekeeping Association have a support board here it's a PHPBB board like this one, so it should feel familiar. It's not quite as lively as here though they can be very serious. I've learnt a lot by reading their posts and it's sometimes easier to post a question there than try and find an answer in books.
