I would love my grandchildren (and me) to be able to pick the hens up - one of them is quite amenable, and the others arent too bad, but only when they're dozy. I guess this is normal.

Also, one of them eyed my bright pink toenail polish rather greedily yesterday, but I removed my feet pretty quick. Although they're fussy, they also seem to be greedy about the food they do like - like their owner.

I think suse sometimes it depends on the temperament of the chicken that you want to pick up. I have some that are amenable to it and others like a wellsomer bantam (nicknamed the road runner) who does not want to be picked up. Try tempting them with a little sweet corn in your hand so they get used to coming up close to you.
Re: the nail polish ~ chickens will peck at anything red ~ if one of them gets cut the others will peck at it remorselessly, hence putting stockholm tar or similar on it to cover the red colour. Maybe you could try a different colour of nail varnish!!
