| got a lot of chicks due in the next couple of weeks and asked the vet the other day when I was there with Windie (wyandotte with broken leg), anyway asked him about getting some vaccine for mareks, said never been asked before for it, nobody on the island uses it, looked in his book and said it was delivered in liquid nitrogen, did not know if it could be got to the island. Do any of you vaccinate against it? What are your thoughts on it? I know there is a few members on Isle of Lewis and others in Scotland and have they had the same trouble or they not bother, can I have your thoughts on this. |

A lot of the hybrids will have been vaccinated at one day old, for Pure Breeds it would be a matter of policy of the breeder.
Interhatch tel. 01246 264646 do a vaccine for Mareks
472310 Poulvac MD-VAC Mareks disease. Injectable vaccine complete with 200ml diluent. (0.2ml dose) 1000 doses (gold cap) £11.50
I don't think this comes in liquid nitrogen, so if you want to vaccinate your flock you could give them a ring. They are very helpful with very fast delivery. |

One thing you need to keep in mind, PRIOR to vaccinating or not vaccinating.........
The Marek's vaccine is a live virus vaccine. Any girl's you currently have and are not vaccinated will be exposed to the virus and more than likely will get the disease. Any girl's you bring in later, will need to be vaccinated prior to arrival as they will also be exposed to the disease then.
My personal choice....(as yes, I have lived through the above because I brought vaccinated chicks into an unvaccinated flock)..........
Don't vaccinate. |
