Yesterday only one of my 6 Jubilee orpington eggs hatched, its yolk sac was almost completely absorbed but still a little sticky, now it is absorbed but looks a bit raw, I am leaving it in the incubator for now as I figure its the best place for it at the moment but i bought some gentian violet to put on the wound to help stop any infection. the guy at interhatch said this would be ok but I dont know if it needs diluting or anything as there are no instructions on the label, any help would be appreciated as the eggs cost me £80 so it is a very expensive chick and I dont want to do anything wrong!

It should be ok,
I wouldn't start putting stuff on it just yet, lots of mine have had sticky bits after hatching but they soon clear up

Just make sure it has access to some water and food

Glad you got one hatch, what happened to the others?

Well I had six eggs to start with, three werent fertile, one died about 8 days in and the other died about 17 days in i think, it had some sort of air bubble inside it?. I hatched ducks last year and had a brilliant rate but this year I have had no luck at all with chickens, I dont know why- its cost me a fortune!

That's a shame,

it's also part of the problem about getting eggs sent through the post, if they've had rough handling then it can cause problems

Hope your little chick thrives for you

All the best

Thank for the replies guys. About the gentian violet i mentioned earlier, do i dilute it or not?, does anyone know?, the little one is ok, its quite weak and not found its feet yet but it is drinking quite often when i take it to the water and its cheeping every now and then. I just want to use the violet on the wound where the yolk was absorbed, it is dry and doesnt look infected but id like to put something on it to make sure it stays that way as he is such a little thing dont want to risk anything.

Glad to hear he/she's doing OK. Smile

When we had a lone chick a few years ago, we put a small mirror in with it. She loved looking at her little 'friend'! Then after 10 days our 2nd lot hatched & they all got on well together.
She's turned into a lovely girl now & is a brilliant mum to her own chicks.
