When talking to a chicken friend about getting some chick crumb he said that he had two chicks hatched in his incubator yesterday (same as mine) but he didn't really need them and that if I came over I could collect them and put them under my broody with my two new babies. He also said that there was another egg he thought was going to hatch and that maybe it would be out by the time we got over.
On arriving we found out that his incubator had gone out overnight and there were two healthy chicks two suffering from their cold start and three more eggs not hatched. They all came home with us.
Now we have a large family. The two healthy chicks the two slower ones and three eggs were heated up on the journey home by the car heater and a hot water bottle. Two of the eggs are now in my incubator and the other one has hatched, we kept the chick in front of the fire and when it started getting up on it's feet we put it out with Mumsy as well. We will let mother nature take it's course and hopefully they will all survive.
Regards Mandy |

Hi Nanny P, he works with old parafin incubators and said he only put in these eggs while bringing it up to temperature and didn't think they would hatch. Then he filled it with the eggs he really wanted but last night the whole thing went out. I think he was more concerned with the eggs he wanted to hatch and was kind enough to give me the others. They are either Barnvelders or Welsummers and so far everyone is still doing well. Mumsy seems to love all her new babies. She doesn't question where they all came from just expands her wings a little more each time I visit giving her a new baby. She now has seven with her but if the other two hatch in the incubator I don't think I will put them in with her perhaps she has enough already after all she is only a small pekin banty mix.
Till tomorrow Mandy (going to bed early) |
