Does anyone know of any natural, organic things that I can feed my hens, that will make them lay more eggs? One of them hasn't laid any for months now, and I don't know why. There seems to be nothing wrong, she's healthy and happy, and (as far as I know) young, but just not laying eggs. Anyone have any ideas? |

At times like this I usually hold the 'stew pot' talk. Sometimes they listen, sometimes they don't.
Nothing you can do that I know of other than increasing food sources...do they have layer's pellets or mash? You could try supplementing with yogurt and other good stuff. |

Oh well. 'stew pot talk' it is then! Guess I'll just have to wait until she decides to lay some eggs. The hen in question is 'Edwina'. She's a partridge wyandotte, v. cute! How could i possibly be cruel to her? I'm sure she'll earn her food eventually! |

Very good point JD and I meant to get back to this earlier, but I was a bit busy splitting and moving posts to the sewer.
Keep a close eye on her for a bit. She will usually hold out till you let them out of the coop or run. Watch where she goes. If she darts off in a direction....you've got your answer. |

I had to clear a part of my garden recently that I hadn't been down to for some time. I found a lovely nest of about a dozen eggs. I think they were from my welsummer, possibly after she had left her babies so I hadn't noticed her not laying.
Now she is moulting I'm thinking that is the reason for no eggs, but maybe I should go on an egg patrol again! |

| I go on a daily egg hunt....there are about 15 usual (unusual) spots for them....every once in awhile they throw me for a loop and find a new one. Sigh............. |

| ...but don't we just love them and all their little ways? I'd be lost without my girls now, even though its getting harder to look after them (but only for the time being I hope) |

I'm pretty sure my Edwina isn't laying her eggs somewhere awkward, as she never really seems to disappear anywhere beyond the garden. However, another of my hens, Maude (v. sweet white silky) has a difficult-to-get-to spot between dad's trailer and car, and the fence. She's not laying right now, probably 'cos she's moulting, but when she does she likes to hide down there. And as for the times when she's broody...(as silkies, it seems, nearly always are!!!) It's hard to get her to move from there, even at night when all the others are snuggled up inside!!!! Anyway, Edwina's not a very broody chook, and she usually stays close to home. Showing her chicken run may not be a bad idea...!!!!! |
