Following on from my post yesterday...
I was intending to breed from my cockerel come the spring but sadly he fell ill and died yesterday. So now I am looking for a young (2008 if poss) cockerel to breed with my Light Sussex ladies. I would like another LS coq if possible, if not an RIR if I could get hold of one.
If not LS or RIR what other breed would you suggest to cross with LS hens as an egg laying/tablebird? Would a "farmyard fowl be suitable"? Or would it be best to stick to a breed?
Sorry Mojo - I know that your excess coqs are in the freezer now!
Does anyone within a reasonable distance of me have any cockerels available and what breeds do you have? |

Hello Sue,
Sad isn't it
I think I am sorted now. I've had a few offers of different breeds (Buff Orpington, and two different Marans) but I would like to keep to LS ideally.
Funnily enough I found an eleveur in the next village to us and have just spoken to her. She has some coqs available from earlier this year so I will probably get one of those, although they're quite expensive IMO at 24€, but they are purebred. Having done some searches on www.LeBonCoin.fr I notice that there are several people looking for LS so when I start hatching then I can always sell on there if I can't face slaughtering them. |

| pure bred LS utility strain are as rare as hens teeth(few and far between but thats another story).............so i am sure you could sell them either as viable eggs/chicks or POL..even a coq or two for crosses |

Thats great, I'm sorry about Marius, he had such character. If you get a pure bred LS when I come to change cocks next year, I'll be able to come to you!!
Merry Xmas |

| I've just spoken to the éleveur and have arranged to pick up the new coq on Tuesday afternoon - a nice Christmas present to myself to cheer me up. |
