No idea how long it will stay hard George!!
All I can report at this point is I tapped it with my knuckles, I tapped it harder, and then I gave up because it was beginning to hurt my knuckles!! HMPBM1 (home made pecka block mark 1) still in one piece
Its now had one whole hour in the oven at Gas 1 (after the 10/20 mins at Gas 6) and is certainly holding its own! I'm not taking it on anymore!!
Have turned the oven off and will leave it in there overnight to dry further (using all my dog biscuit baking expertise here )
Pictoral update:
I think the girls would have a challenge as it is now - only time will tell if it stays like that. And the real test will be after its been hanging in the run for a few days (under the table, safe from the rain, but still in the open).
All chooks tucked up in beddie byes for the night. And I'm away at Mums tomorrow. Will try to get some "actions shots" up when I can and show you what the girls think of it |

Err... I'll even confess to having having a book of dog biscuit recipes
Not got one on chicken treats yet.... hmmm... maybe a gap in the market! |

I used to love Dog biscuits, specially the black ones, I can still remember the taste, I think I was 3 or 4 at the time. I got blamed when the dog died, they said he starved |

Well, its still as hard as a rock. Thought about taking the rolling pin to it for testing, but since the chooks don't have access to the rolling pin, decided his was a bit OTT.
Don't think I'll have time tomorrow to capture the chooks full reaction to it, so it is likely to stay drying out in the oven until Thursday, when I'll be at home, camera at the ready
Hope there are no broken beaks that day Just what I'd need (not) more vets bills
Off topic: Tilly went broody after the saga with the blocked crop, the op to right it, and then the emergency surgery at the vets when it got blocked again . Finally though her crop seems normal - its been a long wait....
And yesterday she laid an egg again after what seems like ages We're past the Baytril withdrawl period, so this one is fair game for eating and most definitely did not go in HMPBM1.... |

Are you allowed to hijack your own thread? Hmm - probably! Good news on the Tilly front though! |

Its not my thread - Bhindi started it.
I've just been the one having a mad / inspirational moment putting strange mixtures in the oven!!
Summayah - Tilly is yours to borrow, if you think it would help! Sadly I think it is only my new girls this year that are laying well? The old ones are in semi retirement But as long as they seem happy and healthy, they can stay here for as long as they like.... pecking away at my home made pecka blocks (or not, I'll find out soon!) |

I've wanted to reply to this all day, but never got a chance.....
Lisa that is absolutely great! And so quick about it too! Please do take pics of the feeding frenzy when it happens. Then, if they love it, please do post the receipe. I have been given a website that will do all the conversions for me...heat temp, etc. |

Oh dear - not quite the frenzy I was expecting I put it in the run and there was a mad rush.... away from it
They haven't had a pecka block before - but given it just looks like the scratch feed which they love, just all in a lump, I thought they'd love it. Or at least try it.
Nope - they're all still at that "OMG its something new, its probably going to kill us, run away everybody" stage
I've even put it in the usual bowl I put their treats in, and scattered a small handfull of grain around it. They've nervously crept in, grabbed a bit of grain and backed off back to sit in the shade.
Chickens
Perhaps its just too hot for lots of energetic pecking...
I'll check later to see if they've overcome their shyness yet |
