|
|
Found this on the Omlet forum - and thought it is worh a go -p if nothing else helps their immune system | Quote: | We add garlic powder to their feed and the poo doesn't smell so no problem there. Just the quantity from Five chickens - compost bins are getting full so we've set up a dustbin as well now - with holes in.
Several people have tried adding powdered garlic to the layers mash and this does help to reduce the smell of the droppings. I've not tried it myself yet - keep forgetting - but it really is supposed to work.
We use the powdered garlic and it really does work. We add 1 tbsp to about a kilo of feed.
I have googled and found the article that first alerted me to the exciting possibility of fragrant poop. I just add the powdered garlic to their mash and don't put anything in the water. Yes, it does work. If you use too much there is a bit of a pizzeria smell!

| I think it's worth a try heather. You have nothing to lose, as it is also recommended to put garlic in their water any way. I'd just be concerned with pellets that the powder would find it's way to the bottom of the bowl with all the dust ~ what about using a crushed garlic clove in their water? |

I am using organic layer's mash so it mixes in quite nicely - just gave it a good mix then shook the peanut feeder like maracas ! quite a sight at 7 in the morning in my nightie I would assume !
Don't think I will put garlic clove in water as it is a peanut feeder so they will probably just pick it out |

| Funny this topic should come up - I put powdered garlic in the peanut feeder and while eating the eggs today I definitely thought that they a slight garlic tainted taste! It could be something to do with the fact that I also add garlic in their water! A bit belts and braces but I thought they were a bit smelly! I have an eglu and when I open the door to let them out in the morning a subtle whiff of garlic wafts out. Sets you up for the day!! Do you think that adding vanilla pod to their water would result in vanilla flavoured eggs for baking? I could start a new trend! |

Hmmm, garlic and vanilla cakes Anything strong tasting, added to their food will come out in the eggs.
Maybe just getting used to the smell of poo, or wearing the garlic hanging in front of your nose will do the trick Heather |

| I've just started adding garlic powder to their pellets - more from a general health point of view rather than a poo point of view. Haven't noticed any difference in poo smell or egg taste, but then haven't been using it very long. Will definitely monitor! |

No - they are Vampire slayers - Buffy and friends - apparently the garlic doesn't come out in their eggs - from people who have been using it a while - but we will see ! If it does will just have to get used to the smell (of pooh - not garlic)

| No, I have spoken to a few people who add garlic to the food and they don't have garlic tasting eggs. I think I went a bit overboard with the garlic and this is my cue to ease up ever so slightly! |

| Well - have been using the garlic powder for a few weeks and can definitely say that it reduces the smell of the poo - almost completely. When I clear out the house there is no smell at all and when the girls poo in front of you during the day, which they invariably do, it's hardly noticeable. Now, I wonder if it would work on my husband..... |

When I get home I'm gonna give it a try, I especially like the idea of that awful waft, as they do it in front of you, being reduced |

I definitely think it works too ! there is no smell at all now
and considering how bad it was to start off with ......
I bought the 1KG of horse stuff - much cheaper than the supermarket stuff and put about one scoop in a KG of mash and mix well .
If you leave the tub open your shed does smell somewhat like a pizzeria and the powder will set like concrete if it gets damp
Worth a try, if nothing else- helps them ward off respiratory infections - which must be good at this time of year
Next thing to try - diatom - hopefully will stop their mash coming through undigested |

Sounds worth giving it a go for that alone!!
Hmmm.... pizza....
Seriously, very interesting thread. Me thinks I'll be off to the shop for some garlic granules.
What sort of quantities are we talking about - I'm not sure how big your "scoop" is. |
