This month is breast cancer awareness month and TLC means Touch, Look, Check.
Particularly relevant given the worries some members have had this year - and it applies to men too. For every 140 women, 1 man also gets breast cancer.

I had lunch with an old school friend today and we were talking about this. Her mum had breast cancer so had instilled it in to both her daughters to check themselves regularly, which they both did. A few months after she got her 10 year all clear my friend found a large lump (about 3 cms) while she was in the bath.
She had it checked and unfortunatley it was cancer, she was horrified that she could have missed such a big lump when she checked so regularly. The doctors told her that it was an agressive growing lump that she had caught as early as possible. It had already reached her lymph glands so she has had all the chemo and radiotherapy, lost all her hair and eyebrows, had a mastectomy and reconstruction (and nipple transplant ) and had her ovaries removed.
She is 3 years clear so far and looked absolutely amazing.
She talked really openly about her treatment and all the horrors that the illness really involves, that you try not to think too much about, and is really positive for the future. She definately made me more determined to make sure I check properly on a more regular basis! |
