I have 2 maran chicks just over 3 weeks old, yesterday I noticed one is stretching out her neck and opening her beak at the same time, and repeating this.

I've opened the beak and looked inside but cant see anything visible. Still active etc.

Could there be something stuck further down? Or another problem? I dont want to prod too much as still small.

Any advice appreciated

Thanks Jo

Hi there,

I also worried about this when I first got chicks, what they are doing is moving food from the crop to the gizzard, the stretching and gaping seems to be more obvious in some chicks than others but they do all do it from time to time, and it's nothing to worry about Smile

if she is doing it repeatedly say more than twice at once I'd be a little worried that she might have something stuck in her crop, but if she's otherwise happy and healthy I wouldn't worry too much

a little vegetable oil massaged into her crop could help - is there any chance she's got into something like string or fibres that could have caused a problem?

Hi, no chance of string etc.

Do you mean rub veg oil on the outsie of the chicks crop area or sringe a little and then massage?
