We have all sorts of rodents in the area inclulding rats, I've seen one go into my shed. I'm not too bothered, as my feed is in metal bins and I could easily make the runs rat proof if necessary, but I have a whingy neighbour who has it in for anyone in the road who keeps animals, and I wouldn't put it past him to blame me for the rats. Is there any way other than catch'im alive traps to get rid of rats without killing woodmice, voles, shrews etc.?

Thats a hard one. If you use a live trap then you can release any woodmice, voles etc back into the wild Smile There must be some on the market somewhere.
Maybe you could do some internet searches for ideas?

This is the only one I know of that's supposed not to be harmful to other animals but that probably doesn't include voles, shrews etc.

Didn't work very well on our rats either though! Rolling Eyes

A monarch trap is a cage trap that doesn't kill, so you can let anything but a rat go back into the wild - is does mean that you have to do the deed though.

That's the best I've found too. Sad

"for most effective control EradiBait must be the primary food source available to the rodent." Probably why it didn't work for you. It got me thinking though, if I shut the shed up so the rat can't get out again, then the bait would be it's only food.
Then it dawned on me that if I simply make the shed rodent proof (It's a concrete shed on a concrete base, so all I need to do is keep the window closed and trim the door edges with metal strips) I can put out (or rather in) whatever is the most effective, kill everything type of poison and it will never hurt anything, then finish off making the runs rat proof, and I'll be able to say with TOTAL conviction
"No way "mate", those rats are nothing to do with me. My runs are ratproof and my feed is stored in metal bins in a ratproof shed, with bait out for anything that gets in while the door is open, so you have to the count of five to get off my property with your paranoid unfounded allegations before I call the police." Very Happy
