Our six 17 week old ladies arrived on Monday and seem to be settling in very well. My query is they seem to spend more time inside the coop than out despite having a huge area of ground to roam around in. The feed and drinkers are outside the coop and there is also plenty of shelter.
Is this normal or should we shut the pophole once they come out?

| It can take a while for them to feel confident in new surroundings. If they have not been used to lots of space it will take them a while to get the hang of it. Don't shut them out - they will need to feel that they can hide if they get spooked! |

It's early days yet - are they coming out at all? They must be making a quick dash otherwise they'd have starved by now I wouldn't shut the pop hole just yet - they obviously feel safe and secure and it would just stress them to be shut out. Try sprinkling a few treats - a little corn, etc. around by their door and it might make them a little braver.
As long as they eat and drink - that's the main thing. If they aren't eating and drinking and you are getting worried then you could always place a small amount of food and water in the henhouse, as well as outside (just during the day though) - but they will eventually decide that outside is definitely more interesting than indoors. |

Thanks for the quick replies. Yes they are coming out and also eating and drinking so I guess I will just let them find their own timescales.
As I write it is thunder and lightning and lo and behold they are out and about. I think they will fit in well here. |

Well they seem to have sussed now that outside is more interesting than in. Thanks for the reassurance.
A couple of ducks will be arriving within the next two weeks so that should be interesting. |
