Had another girl go down today. OH came in the house and from what he described, I thought it was the same as the others.
Went out to look at her and it wasn't at all the same. Her belly was all distended and soft...very liquidy. Being as how I have been through the wringer lately with diseases, I was not too keen on keeping her around to see what I could do about it.
OH put her down. I decided to do a post mortum on her. We sliced her belly open gently, so as not to disturb what we might find. The moment it was opened a huge amount of yellow liquid came pouring out. I would have to guess about 4 cups worth. Once that was drained out, I checked out her organs. Some of them were swollen up with a clear liquid. Her intestines were a very pale pink, almost white and shriveled up small. There was this almost neon orange lining to the inside of her stomach wall.
Any guesses? |

As I know you are the best next thing to a Vet do you have any idea from your searching about what it is?
Is she the only one showing signs? |

Sorry to hear you lost another one
What you describe sounds like classic egg yolk peritonitis (rapid decline, belly swollen with yelllow fluid...) Its where the egg yolk misses its normal route and falls into the abdomen instead (hence yellow colour) and massive infection sets in.
You did the best thing for her ending her suffering quickly - she wouldn't have made it.
And good on you for doing a PM.
At least you know the others won't be coming down with it...

Thanks Lisa. Yes, it is a comfort knowing that it is not yet another contagious disease. I am glad I put her down before she looked miserable then.
This chicken stuff is really hard on a girl's heart. |
