| ... ear tagged Baldr, our first born goat. He's got the honour of the 00001 ear-tag for our holding number and my first very nervous effort of doing it. He's forgiven me now he's got two matching earrings (barring one having an RFID tag on it too) and feeding him a big handful of carrots. |

| No, there was no blood at all! A little bruising on one of the ears, but otherwise fine. Baldr's quite happy still. I'll get a photo a little later this morning. |

| I think you've done well, too. I found it quite nerve wracking. I was so worried about hurting the goat. |

well done bradders i hate that job as well
he looks lovely stephen i must get on and order some
first job for the day for me has been first catch your goats ,who have broken out of the shed ,the big one having learnt that no gap is to small and if that doesn't work brute force will
and if you try really hard you can get a bucket handle around a togg stomach ,which she learnt a little while ago
so the dog had a good morning rounding up goats
but it's a beautiful morning so before i caught them,i took my coffee into the garden sat and watched them graze and do my weeding

Hi everyone
Yesterday with the livestock....
I helped Bradders let the chickens out into the yard and gave them their breakfast.
I went a checked the cattle on the mule with Bradders and Spana's OH (John).
In the afternoon i helped spana top up the chickens food. After that me Bradders and John fed the calves in the creep.
I've just let the chickens into the yard with Bradders and gave them some wheat.
And i've just fed Tatty and Fluffball (Spana's 2 cats).
I'm going home today |

Whats involved in ear tagging... how big is the hole you make? Do they get any local aneasthetics or is it just like it and lump it? |

I should imagine it's like having your ears pierced
you put one side of the tag each side of the gun and squeeze both together
one tag side has a hole the other an arrow shaped end that fits into the hole
the hole's about 3mm wide
they are a right pain when they pull out, I've seen sheep where the ears been ripped in half after they've caught the tag on something |

As debcat says, the gun does it all. No anaesthetic. You've got to be quick and not hesitate otherwise it's going to hurt more. It wasn't pleasant, and it's not a nice thing to do, but once the shock is over, it's ok. He soon forgave us. I think we were more upset about it than he was.
Which reminds me... we've got the other one to do soon. |
