I've got a mixed bag of chicks. I know some are either Barnevelder or Welsummer. Mine are six weeks also. If you've got any more pics I'd love to see them to help me identify them.

| Yes chook-in eire they are - cute or what? . They are now 6 weeks and are out in the growers coop (covered with tarpaulins to keep them dry) - will try and get a photo if it ever stops raining! Only 2 seem to be developing combs (although not much) so hopefully 2 cockerels - i want to keep one - and 4 pullets. I know the chest colouring can show the sex but what about the ones with darker backs at hatching? |

Will try and get a photo of them at 6 weeks when it stops raining but both at hatching and 6 weeks there should be an obvious difference between the 2 breeds.
At hatching the Welsummers are yellow/gold with a stripe down the head and back (females usually have an eye stripe too). By 6 weeks Welsummer pullets have salmony pink chests, light gold and black neck feathers and brown backs - the cockerels have black chests and dark gold neck feathers.
At hatching Barnvelder chicks are very different to Welsummers - sort of tortoiseshell . 6 week old Barnvelder pullets and cockerels look the same (the cockerels have bigger combs) and have the classic brown and black double laced feathering of the adults - just not so shiney or well defined. |

Hi Chris,
4 pullets would be perfect! Hope you are right. The variation in down in terms of the amount of black is not indicative of sex. Different birds/lines carry different amounts of eumelanizers ('blackeners'). They will all look pretty much the same eventually but some have thicker lacing than others and males can be a touch lighter or darker as well.
For sexing, male chicks have white chest down, females grayish-brown but it's not 100%. I have had chicks with apparently white chests at hatch turn into females but never had gray-brown chested ones turn out to be males.

I had 3 with grey chests, 2 with creamy white chests and 1 that was grey underneath with a white chest that had a grey spot in the middle (maybe hedging it's bets  ) so fingers crossed. |

Thanks for posting the photos!!
I've definitely got two, one boy(got a some headgear) and one girl( no headgear).
I've been really surprised at how slow they are to feather up compared to other breeds.

Sadly I won't see that - yesterday a rat managed to chew it's way through 2 layers of weldmesh and killed everyone of them - I'm gutted  . |

Got your e-mail Chris. That's so sad, you must be gutted. Are you sure it wasn't a mink or something? I have seen rats take the occasional chick but I have not seen them go on a killing spree, unlike mink (I lost 12 8-week olds this summer in one go). Perhaps a rat chewed its way in but such a hole would be big enough for a mink to come in after.
I was so happy to see some of 'my genes' over in the UK 
Let me know if you want to start over again in the new year and I'll send you a batch.
