I've only just seen this thread, Bhindi you're chook set up is fantastic, an inspiration to everyone, and so clean.

You really have made an excellent job of it, and so much thought has gone into it for ease of cleaning, maintenance, security and welfare of the hens.

Well done mate! I'm absolutely green with envy.

Thank you very much for the praise, though obviously I can not claim most of the major donkey work.. that goes to my OH Geoff. There are certainly tweaks that I would change with hindsight.. for eg. the doorways into the nest boxes were cut out too low, and the girls when trying to go broody would roll the eggs out of one nest & incredibly manage to roll it over the lip into the other. This I have just improved by finding the old cut out bits and taking a slither of the bottom and glueing it into the doorway.. though I dont know why I bothered, they haven't used those 2 nests for yonks, when we increased the flock by 4 they all seemed to want to lay at the same time. So we placed a hooded cat litter tray, just by the other nest boxes,.. so guess what they all want to lay in that now.. and they can fit 3 in at a time if needs must.. Laughing They are fickle creatures!

lol they can be amusing.

Your OH is very clever, he's done a fantastic job there.

I miss my OH, he passed away 3yrs ago, he used to make all my duck and chicken houses, goat pens etc. Now I have to make them myself and the air is usually blue when I hit my thumb with the hammer or spend 2hrs sawing a piece of wood he'd have done in 2 minutes lol

These are quite old pics now, but I'm pleased to say all but 2 plants are thriving, (The 2 that died are both escalonia's.)

I will eventually take a pic of the other half of the brick built bit, that now sports a sink with hot and cold running water, and cupboards below, because I was getting grumbled at for my dirty foot prints in the kitchen when washing up bowls etc.

So I'm self contained in there now. (Have not got the kettle yet, but I'm planning on getting one) Laughing

bloody hell , can i come and live there Shocked

fantastic mate Very Happy

I do it daily, as I can't afford for the soil to go 'bad'. But its easy enough, as when at home they are in the garden most of the time.

My neice was chook sitting last week for me, I think she only did it once in all that time, and by golly it stunk like a farm yard when I got back from hols.

I clean the inside roosts daily too, but unlike others on the forum, I very rarely do a major clean out, so swings and roundabouts there.

I wouldnt think you'd have to do a major clear out Bhindi, the whole setup is immaculate. It's a credit to you and your dedication to your birds.

Here's our little set up. My husband made all of it, and everything, bar a few bits of wood, was reused old bits! I know the roof slopes the wrong way, but we don't mention that...often. Very Happy Wink
