| It seems very unfair that they are not entitled to any compensation. On top of the heartbreak of losing all of your herd. |

Vaccination is the only thing to protect your herds.
It always amuses me when they say 'rare' Golden Guernsey goats, there's hundreds of the things down here. |

As a breeder and keeper of dairy goats I was aware of this problem from the very start.
A well known Golden Guernsey breeder decided to give up her goats for various reasons (something that happens at some time in our lives). They were sold all over the place to other pedigree herds (one was best Golden Guernsey at the Breed Show in 2007).
Then one herd starting losing goats and it turned out to be TB (Bovine) despite the fact that Carol had never kept cattle. However, the area she lived in (West Wales) is a TB hotspot. Lots of rumours abounded that she had sold goats on deliberately knowing they had TB (untrue), she was being unhelpful with DEFRA (untrue), etc, etc.
At this point in time, the TB seems to be confined to only Golden Guernseys but a lot of goatkeepers who went to the same shows have had theirs tested as a precaution (mine included). So far it doesn't appear to have got into the national herd and we are keeping our fingers crossed that it remains this way.
If you need further information on this and other goat health issues please visit the British Goat Society website (goat health): http://www.allgoats.com/ |
