Just curious but If you could have one cockerel on your desert island what breed would be your number one choice Can you tell me why eg; is it personality or good looks or something else.

have we got hens of any particular type there as well ,mine would be according to the type of hen but ernie my white dorking would be top of my favorites list ,he stood and helped me rake up the driveway yesterday picking up all the worms as i raked ,would we also be eatting the birds as well or just to keep egg production going
erine would be good for eatting birds ,but the leghorn might be better for egg production
that's a good question

My Gold Dutch Cockeral. He has loads of character and looks after his hens well, he is also cheap to feed, which would mean more for me |

Right then...good point Milkmaid, suppose its going to be like choosing a husband so we're probably looking for a good all rounder that is good looking, fun to be with, easy to keep under control and brings home the bacon (eggs) |

Hi
On my desert island it would have to be a silver appenzeller cockerell I think but for practibility it should be a very large breed like a very big light sussex as you could breed him and have eggs and meat!! but still need the spuds and veg for a mean sunday dinner on my desert island. Maybe would comprise and have sweet and sour chicken with the fresh mangos and pineapples!! |

Much as I love my pure breeds, easily the best cockerel we've had over the years was a Buff Orpington x Light Sussex - a big meaty bird, with tons of character and a soppy temperament. A good breeder too, who passed his meaty genes onto his offspring, so I have / would feed well on my island!

Well I know what I wouldn't have and thats the Maran cockerel I raised from a chicken. He was wicked - every time I went in the field he went for me. Although I was a little sad when the fox got him ......
I like my current cockerels, the two Charlies who are Rhodies, nice boys, no malice in them, quiet to handle - except when they fight each other. |
