|
|
Hello just picked up an assortment of hens at the weekend (bluebell, cream legbar, amber star, welsummer and silver laced wynadotte) and have two to ask about potentially being a cockeral. The first is a late March/April hatch Welsummer that seems to have a too red comb! the second is just a little silver- laced wynadotte grower who still has to get her back feathers in- what are the signs that she might be a he (if it is too early to tell!) the others were sold to me as pullets so no need to question!
however i do wonder if the amber star is really a white star-- as her earlobe is white!
sorry for the blurry pictures.. the excitement of new chickens makes me shakey!

How old are they? At around 5 - 6 weeks Welsummer girls have a salmony pinky brown chest and boys have a browny black one (which gets blacker as they get older)- boys don't get their "cockerel" feathers till around 16 - 20 weeks although they do look different to yours at around 10 weeks.
This photo is of pure Welsummers and Welsummmer X's at 5weeks - the one on the right on the perch is a pure Welsummer boy. |

i think the welsummer is around 14 weeks. the wynadotte 10 weeks(maybe 12?) they were both from hoby keepers who weren't too sure exactly.
Thanks for the pointers about the black chest feathers-- the fellow we got her from also knew of this (and has said we can exchange if she turns he!) and we have checked the feathers she does not have the black.
As for her not looking like a welsummer I think she must be in some sort of pullet molting stage (i read there are 3 before coming into lay?) as she hasn't reallly got the fine feathers around her eye yet just some little white nubs!

Are they any ideas or things to look for in the development of my sliver-laced wynadotte grower to be able to tell the sex?
Thanks! |

| Sorry oznog but female Welsummers don't look like yours at any stage. Females neck and body feathers are very different once they have lost their baby down. Females have brown body feathers with light gold neck feathers, rather like the one to the left of your Welsummer in your last photo and the one to the left of the boy in my photo - ignore tuft on head (she is a CLB x Welsummer but has the body and neck feathers identical to my pure Welsummers). |

| Photo is difficult to see the chest properly but if it has black in it then it could be a Welsummer boy - just maybe not as old as you were told. mine are now 12 weeks and the Welsummer boys are beginning to look, and have started feathering up, like "proper" Welsummers |

Yes. The one you thought was a Welsummer is in fact a cross between Welsummer and Cream Legbar. Pretty hens (and it IS a hen), will probably lay brown eggs - not as deep as the Welsummer, but pretty anyway.
They don't make particularly good mums, being keen to abandon the chicks around 6 weeks ... just so you know if she ever goes broody ... we've got 2, and they're both identical in terms of motherhood skills ; if they're ever allowed to brood again, they'll be in a large broody run so at the first signs of abandonment, the mum can be removed, leaving the chicks safely confined. |

Do you mean oznogs Welsummer or my x Vanessa? In my photo the one second from right on perch (next to pure Welsummer boy) is a 5 week old CLB x Welsummer (Welsummer dad, CLB mum) - she looks very different to oznogs and has the typical CLB tuft (guess what she is called, Tufty of course ) |
