I've finally got some ex-battery hens! Not in quite as bad shape as I feared, but they have been 'out' since last Saturday and so have already started to recover. I think one might have lice - she keeps shaking her head as if irritated, so I'll Frontline all four (I know, I said only three!) tonight when they've had a chance to settle a bit.
I had a little cry as they took a nibble of grass and had a sunbathe. I am such a softy!
And - wonder of wonders - the one I think will be top hen has laid an egg in the nesting box already! (Nesting box! What a grand name for a corner I've partitioned off in the converted kennel!)

Ah it's so nice to think of them enjoying the sun. Bet you have more tears as they take new chicken steps in the big world outside a cage |

These were taken within an hour of getting them home on Friday - Independance Day! Sorry about the file size, I've been messing with Photobucket for over an hour and can't get them smaller!

I've had three eggs so far, the yolks are so pale! One of the girls ventured to take two grains of corn out my hand this morning, but promptly dropped them. The feathers they still have are starting to look cleaner and shinier now they have the time, space and energy to preen. We already have a top hen who is very bossy over food and water, so I've put another feeder and drinker in.

They don't look too 'oven ready' either. Quite well feathered in fact.
I expect it's lovely watching them return to normal behaviour. |

It is an absolute delight to watch them return to 'normal'. They do have large patches of feathers missing, particularly round their necks, and the rest of the feathers are really tatty. But, I was expecting them to be almost bare!
I've started them on Life Guard tonic at medication strength, and plan on giving them some live yoghurt (as soon as I make some) to help both their calcium levels and their internal flora.
Resisting the urge to give them any treats at the moment apart from a few grains of mixed corn this morning. (And I do mean a few! About 6 grains each!)

Great pics, and lovely to see the girls already enjoying life.
If you want wheat to be a bit more gentle on them, soak the wheat in water overnight, it becomes more nutricous and much more digestable. |
