| Yes - you can kill them with sprays like Indorex which you can get from vets/pet stores - most household flea sprays will do as long as they have permethrin in them. |

| diatom is a powder that you put down on the floor of the coop and in all the cracks and crevasses - it kills the mites by dessication, basically drying them out - it doesn't work when it's wet so needs to be kept dry - what does it say you dilute it with? |

Give your coop a weekly clean with a dettol solution and allow to dry thoroughly before letting birds back in. I also put a natural mite/louse powder in their bedding and the hemicore we use in the run.

I used a jeyes fluid solution sprayed on once every two days and that worked. You have to do it thoroughly though. You might want to invest in a hand sprayer thingy or use an old window cleaner container like I did...
Good luck |

Dettol is an antiseptic - it won't kill red mite.

Sorry Itsybitsy, but you will find plenty of people who use it and swear by it Maybe it's a case of those that use do a weekly clean and apply a lot of time to husbandary, I dont know. What I do know is that it works
If I ever get redmite I'll catch a load and get some of the eggs and let my science mad son do some experiments on what kills them
Sometimes I think we rely to much on powerful chemicals, spending a fortune at the same time, when basic things can work just as well.
I'm now off to rub my coop with citronella oil to help keep the flies at bay

| im sure i read once in cage and aviary mag, that if you keep a cage full of zebra finches in with your hens you dont get redmite.something to do with the zebras blood,it kills them.might post the question on a cage bird website or even to cage and aviary itself |

Good to hear from some fellow dettol users
Does anyone know a supplier who seels it in larger amounts than the local supermarket? We get through tons of the stuff as we now use it on all our animal pens etc and the bootles run out fast
What I want to know is where the redmite come from in the first place?

Aldi's sell a similar antiseptic to dettol for quite a bit less - might be worth a try. I've wondered that too about where red mite come from?! |
