As a new member to the forum I thought I would share with you my early days as a new chicken owner (Mods if I have posted in the wrong area please move it).

It started following watching Hugh F-Ws programme.

So we e-bayed a house, I used a local wood recycling place to source the wood for the pen and then went to see those lovely people at Cotswold Chickens salute to get 'my girls'. We went for a:

Bovan Goldline a.k.a Rusty
Sussex Star a.k.a Snowey
Bluebelle a.k.a Bluebelle

They have on day two settled in really well and are just a joy to watch. What with our allotment (yep the plan is to take the girls out to the plot to forrage) and now the hens I feel like blogging.

Welcome to the forum Chris & how nice that you have your hens already. We'd love to see some pics of them if possible please! Very Happy
I hope you've made a large run because it won't be long before you're wanting more hens. Wink Laughing

I look forward to hearing how you go on with your chickens. Its so exciting when you first get them, and waiting for that first egg ......!!

I have had chickens for many years, but can still remember waiting for my pullets to start laying when I had my first hens.

Wishing you many happy years with your new chickens, and here's hoping they lay lots of eggs for you.

Now started, your flock will increase.....

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the forum! I'm new to chicken-keeping too, had my 4 girls 2 weeks now, aren't they fun? My poor lot havve had to put up with near enough 2 weeks of rain but I've covered the run so they're keeping dry - which means me and my OH can sit inside with them on rainy days like this. Lord knows what the neighbours think!

Would love to see pics of your girls - I'm still trying to figure out how to put pics on here, I'll figure it out eventually!

Jackie

They are the best way of wasting time, I spend hours sitting in the garden just watching what they get up to

Complete addiction. A brilliant reason for not doing any housework. An excuse to take up wood work. Bewilderment at how three turned into (fill in your own number here) so quickly. Hours of amusement, and some superb eggs!

We've had our for 5 days now and they are gradually making their way our of the hen house into the pen, our dog barks at them and they run back in again though so I'm not sure what to do about this. He will get bored with doing it sooner or later but in the mean time its a pain. He's a lovely softy dog and wouldn't do them any harm, he's used to hamsters and mice mountain climbing over him but of course the chix don't know that do they Confused

Have fun with your chickens, I can't wait for our first egg. The kids run down every morning to change their water and look for an egg they're such fun.
