In my opinion they do the job equally well. I bought a "posh" candler when i first started out, but it is really just an overpriced tourch, and broke soon after!

You can really use anything - from a torch, to a toilet roll over a lightbulb! Just make sure the room is darkish.

I think for people just starting out, who dont really know what they are looking for, the more powerful the better - but once youve candled a few batches, you will only need a quick look to get your result.

Hope this helps,

Jen

Some dark eggs are hard to see on both prof or home made candlers, it wont really make a difference as long as your home made bulb is powerful enough. You can google something like "home made egg candler" and there are loads of plans online. Or just put some kind of tube against a light source, and check the egg on that - thats what i do! nothing complicated needed really!
