Because of the rats, and the shed that we want to move the birds into is gonig to take a few years to get up to scratch, mum and dad are thinknig of buying a poultry coop.
Anyway the question is how big would a coop need to be for about 26 bantams. Also is it worth converting a shed from homebase or b & Q or sumthing instead of buying a coop. We foumd one chicken coop that would hold them, and tis the cheapest we have found for the nubmer of birds we have. It is to big however at 40 birds, plus its £500 but we can't find them cheaper than that for just 25-30 birds. Any help much appreciated
Thanks

Hi Ruth
You can get the Brentford range for about £361
Which is probably as easy as trying to convert a shed, as you would have to make the perches and nest boxes
A lot of suppliers sell it, have a look at Ascott or henhouses |

You might find that the one above, whilst quoting for 40 birds, is in fact not too big for your girls. I think most manufacturers of coops tend to use guidelines which allow more birds than you probably would like to in a coop.
Sorry, I haven't explained this well, hope someone will know what I mean. |

I was told when we first started that you needed at least 2 square feet for each standard and at least one square foot per bantam as floor space for the hen house.
We built out hen house as a shed - half for the hens, half for the bikes, then we got more birds so the bikes had to move out! lol! perches are made from branches and hubby knocked up the nest boxes.
After marking the floor into squares and writing each chicken's name on a square I would like to know how to get them onto their own squares and not walking all over the place! |
