Hello - Newbie here

I have a converted wooden wendy house as my coop and I am thinking of building some detached outdoor nestboxes. I was wondering if anyone else has had any success with these and if so what what do they look like?

Regards

Hi and welcome to the forum

I have some outside nestboxes, but they are not detatched from the house - just kind of stuck on the side, access to them is from the inside of the house.

They save floor space.

I guess what I'm asking is can I have nest boxes out in the run rather than attached to the coop?

I can't see any reason why not, as long as you can make them dark enough, as hens *generally* like somewhere dark to lay.

Welcome aboard, by the way. Very Happy

Why would you want them out in the run?

A hen likes to feel secure when she's laying an egg, and they like to hide, so going into the coop and into the nestbox is getting away from prying eyes. So to achieve that secure feeling you would have to make sure they were enclosed and as Vanessa said - dark inside. Why can't you have one inside or attatched to the coop?
