does anyone have any idea on colour genetics?
What colours would a Gold Laced Orpington Cockeral crossed to Buff Orpington hens?
Any ideas on what colours? I have bought 10 eggs and we know it's gonna be a suprise which to be honest the kids are looking forward to the suprise but I'm curious

at a guess i would think you would get a diluted laced bird, although i dont know anything about genetics, i hatched my ex batts crossed with a splash orpington cockeral and they all look just like the splash orp, even down to the grey legs, luckily i only have one male so hopefully i will have a pretty bird with the egg laying ability of the ex batts because i get HUGE EGGS from them
good luck, thats the best bit wondering what they will look like, i just threw a few ex batt eggs in the incy when i was incubating cream legbars just to fill the spaces up and i was more excited to see what the cross breeds would look like... sad or what!
keep us updated when they feather! |

I know Hen Gen is knowledgeable on poultry genetics
If no-one replies you could try asking here they have a specific section on poultry genetics and may be able to help. |

| I believe both colours are genetically 'gold', so either colour, or something between colours most likely. |

awe, he bit 'over romantic' then lol
He is a poser tho ain't he. hubby noticed that from the pics lol he knows he looks good
They are going in the incubator this afternoon with the rest of the eggs after I have given this incubator tray a good wash after yesterdays hatching lol
Then new incubator gets set up for next lot to go in next week.
I have a couple of my sisters who, 1. have never incubated and 2. didn't want the early stress lol so I'm doing all the hatching and they get to come chose pullets later on. I get the hard work lol
Then my mum wants a few aswell lol
they'll be able to pick a mixed flock tho aswell which is nice. |

| what do you do with the cockerals? i have managed to home a cream legbar chick, luckily only had one boy left, i have 2 week old splash orp crossbreed and another 14 purebreds in the incy, i already have a home for one of the cream legbar boys waiting just wondered what other people do with theirs, thought i could possibly dispatch but when it came to the crunch, just cant bring myself to do it! |

| I think it'll be dispatch for any spare males. First choices would be those with any nasty temperments as I would like to breed from those that are more docile. At least I know in doing it ourselves that care and attention has been given to the process. Not everyone can keep 30 or 40 cockerals so for some, the pot it is. That would be with my silver dorkings, cream legbars and marans, welsummers and Barneveldars. Some are just too nice a breed if you know what I mean lol |

Yes, but problem is they normally want them 'to' dispatch. So double edged sword really. |

do you have trouble with the chicks pecking at the ducklings feet? I know I couldn't leave my ducklings in with the chicks, they ended up getting dragged about by the feet! I wouldn't have thought a chick would realise the difference between duck and chick feet, but apparently they do!
Maybe it was because my chicks were a few days older. |

aye i do. but they had only just come out the incubator so still a bit knackered, too knackered to peck each other. then not to mention them having to be on different food lol got sacks of feed everywhere lol chick crumbs, duck crumbs, chick grower, duck grower, corn, lol
Ducks are now in the duck brooder and chicks in the chick brooder. and I'm using leccy like something not right lol i need solar powered brooders lol |
