| I have 3 chicks that are now 3 weeks old and this is my first foray into this field. All are growing well and are active and healthy, but one has what I believe to be an unabsorbed yolk sac. She has had this since I got her a week ago. Do I need to do anything or will it drop off eventually? Will it affect her in any way? I would really appreciate your advice. |

| Are you sure it's the yolk sack? I have had a few chicks hatch with it still attatched but it normally shrivels and falls off within a couple of days - 3 weeks seems a very long time for it to still be there. Maybe someone else will have a bit more experience with this and be able to shed more light. Good luck. |

Just what I though Chris. At 3 weeks it probably isn't a yolk sac which normally disappears within a few days.
Could you take a photo & post it so we can have a look, please? |

| Sorry I've been ages but it took a while to get a decent photo and now I cant seem to be able to paste the image onto here. Any tips please? I'll keep trying but the 'thing' is about 2cm long by 1cm wide and looks a bit like a build up of droppings. It's stuck fast though and the skin around it is quite bald and pink. Thanks for replying so quickly - I was quite amazed to have two responses so fast! |

| Looks like a shitty bum. Either a quick yank to remove it and coat the area with vaseline, or wash it off with warm water, which is time consuming & stressful, the coat the area with vaseline. |

that definitely looks like it's at the vent rather than the umbilicus - but make sure before pulling it off!
I've soaked chicks in warm water before and they seem to calm down and relax once they are in there - I'd go for that option myself as if it bleeds the other chicks will likely peck at it. |

To everyone who has replied and read my posting - my chick (Steve!!) has had a happy event - her encumberance has dropped off!
Thanks to you all, it is good to know that if I have anymore worries with my three charges, there is help at hand!
