I got asked this question via PM, and thought I'd share the answer here as others may be thinking the same.
| Quote: | i was reading your info on about how much you pay for this forum £500 per year i started a forum for (deleted) a couple of years ago and thats only about £8 per month hosting with a company called noclue so why is this so dear ,or are you trying to make money out of it |
Far from it. So far this year we're losing money.
We started with shared hosting, at that sort of level, and we rapidly outgrew it. The resources needed to run the forums and galleries are huge. We use over 25% of any standard shared platform - at that level you cannot ever use shared hosting. You get kicked off very quickly. We have nearly 2000 registered users, huge numbers of guests every day, and are listed in most search engines when people search for poultry related stuff. That generates a lot of traffic. Typically over 30 GB per month of traffic - and that's what you pay for.
We didn't have much choice, either close the forums, or move to a dedicated server. |

Oops, paypal just refused my card!
Will happily donate as soon as I sort it out. This is a great forum, with great members and well worth keeping online. Thanks |

| Orange means the loss is less than one month's hosting fees. I wouldn't worry too much about that - we're due some advertising income in a couple of weeks that should balance it out again and turn us green. |

It's been orange for a few days now.
I have just subscribed to a monthly Paypal amount because I keep meaning to & never get round to it!
But whenever I buy from Amazon it's always through PKF. |

| I have sent a payment through paypal . I have already received a huge amount of support and advice through this forum and it would be criminal if with so many members it was not financially able to survive |

| Don't answer if you don't want to but how much do people normally donate at a time? Having never done this before, but wanting to help keep this brill site going, some pointers would be a great help. |

I haven't donated for ages Chris, as I don't have any "earnings" now, when I did, it was a tenner I think, and I will probably donate a fiver when I get "paid" in a couple of weeks. Every little helps. |

This is a generalisation, and it's not a "you must".
For subscriptions, most people choose £1 or £2 per month.
For donations, most people donate between £5 and £10.
Anything is good, we're happy for any donations, no matter how small. |

Thanks Debcat got your pm - can't pm you back though there seems to be a problem at the moment. Thanks also Nannyp. I know it's not compulsary but I would like to help, even if it's not alot, I've gained an awful lot of confidence throught this (and 1 other) forum - I don't think a "thankyou" now and then is too much and I'm sure my chooks would agree with me . |

| For those who do not like PayPal, there is now also a Google Checkout service available on the front page. |
