I am having a new chicken house delivered and erected on Sunday. It has a built on run and is just over 3ft wide , 12ft long and 5ft high. Hubby has put down some slabs at end where raised house will be (with space under for food/water). What we cant decide is what will be best for rest of run? We have thought about slabs all over, but want them to be able to scratch about. Been advised not to put bark down due to health risk and grass will get trashed fast. Any advice or ideas would be great as we need to be ready before the company arrive on Sunday.

| I've got a layer of straw down in my run - keeps the ground nice and dry and they like to scratch around in it - when it gets mucky I put it all on the compost heap and put a fresh layer down. |

| Chopped straw or small gravel lets the water drain away through to the soil and keeps their feet clean. |

From what I've read you'd be best putting down the slabs then putting a layer of gravel on it, you can then disinfect regularly and the ground won't 'sour'. I have hard packed earth on mine and may put down gravel over it if I'm let.....have to ok it with OH but if it stops the mud it'll be worth it. Wood chip is better than bark, as bark can harbour fungii. Straw is good but takes ages to compost, and can get smelly in my experience. HTH. |
