Hi everyone

We now have a lill' chick and 3 '2 week olds'.
The breeder who supplied us with our POL last year harped on about how all his hens were vaccinated against salmonella and wormed etc.
(he does still send us wormer by post)

What should we be doing with our newest additions and when?
Can anyone recommend where to get the vaccines\wormers for the youngsters?

Many thanks in advance

Danny

You can buy vaccines from Interhatch in Chesterfield, but they only come in quantities for 1,000 chickens AKAIK.

Worming should be done at around six month intervals. The only licensed wormer for poultry in the UK is flubenvet which can be bought at feed merchants etc. though your a vet may prescribe something else

I don't vaccinate, I only have around 50 birds and it just isn't viable. I think as long as I keep my hygiene standard high and maintain my bio security I shouldn't have any problems. I leave those kind of worries to the big boys.

So far I've never had any problems

The more I read, the more I'm convinced that worries like salmonella are more to do with factory farming issues than a smallholder issue. We're just not as likely to let barns etc to get into a state where salmonella would thrive rampantly.
