Hi all,
I was making a Moroccan Tagine at the weekend, (as you do!) and this involved cracking eggs into the dish for the last half hour so you have lamb meatballs with tasty poached eggs over the top. I cracked the first one and as I dropped it into my pot, I noticed the white was bloody! I fished it out immediately and the whole white was filled with blood.  It was pretty gross, but I got it all out, cooked the dish for a bit longer and was more careful with the next batch of eggs.
Now I'm worried about the hen that laid it! She's a Light Sussex and seems healthy. I'm used to seeing spot in eggs, but not this amount. Is it an indication of something wrong? or just an anomaly?

| well the blood spots are from burst capillaries so I'd assume it was a larger blood vessel bursting. i'd keep her in the dark for a couple of days to give her insides a chance to recover before producing another egg. |

Thanks Vikki. Unfortunately I was away so by the time I got back she had continued to lay. I have two LS, and one is definately not quite right. Her comb is pale and her feathers are tatty. She seems to be eating well but her sister looks a million times healthier. I've checked for red mite, lice and have wormed them recently (though with Verm-ex, Flubenvet is on order! in case that's the problem). It must have been quite a large capillary, I got quite a shock. She's in laying now so will check the egg and separate her if it's dodgy.

| All further eggs have been fine. I gave the house a really good clean and spray and dusting today but I saw no sign of red mites. I might just grab her off her perch now, just in case it's lice! |
