Came home the other night and son had cooked himself a curry, well that's what it smelt like. . . . he came down from his room and said "I made a curry. . . . it wasn't very good" then he got a tub of Swartz Tikka Masala Marinading spices out of the cupboard and said "I used this, I think it wasn't very good because it's for marinading" We had a discussion on what I use for a curry and he went back to his room. I looked at the tub, the use by date was June 1996 Shocked Embarassed Embarassed I called him back down having remembered the one and only time I used it (when fresh) I didn't think it was very good then either, we had a good laugh about it and I put the tub in the bin.

i have an embarrassing story! Having a large family,I often make soups and stews in the winter months and I often make dumplings to go with them, and buy suet and veg suet very often. Anyway, the last stew I made, had dumplings and I thought they smelt "different" but not really unpleasant... anyway to cut a long story short, every one ate them but complained that they weren't up to my usual standard. Anyway I checked the sell-by date and it was dec 2002!!! Well, no one was rushed to hospital but they havent stopped talking about how i tried to poison them since January! I just dont understand how it had been in my larder since 2002 as I Buy it so frequently! Embarassed Embarassed

I would have thought dried stuff would be ok! I love indian cooking and if I had to replace everything every couple of months it would cost me a fortune. Not to mention the stuff I get abroad! Will have to have a look though!

Spices loose their ooommph. Generally such minor details as a use by or sell by date don't bother me - but this was 12 years Shocked It wasn't very good when I bought it, which is why of course it has sat at the back of the cupboard. Interestingly I have only lived in this house for 10 years and I have bought it since I have been here, so it was well out even then.

I must confess that whole spices are things I shop for when in the middle east. On my last trip we saved a fortune on our most commonly used spices, and we regularly save a bomb on saffron by buying the good Iranian stuff in the middle east, rather than the Spanish in Europe.

I love to shop for spices, Stephen. On our holiday in Morocco I got lots of stuff. We now have asian supermarkets dotted about which sell stuff for a fraction of the supermarket price, though in massive quantities! I bought a sack (not a bag, a SACK!) of star anise recently for €8, I'll be using it to decorate the house at Christmas at this rate. Laughing
