I've just done a check & the broadband speed my exchange can handle at the moment it 5Mb
But there's this odd note at the bottom:-
However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.
What do they mean? All we have is a normal phone line to the house, 2 extensions & 3 computers. Nothing else? |

I think you must mean "technologically incontinent" , which will explain the enema |

Thanks Steph, I am handing this over to OH when he gets in, but a question....we have our line (Internet and Telephone) with Tiscali not BT do you think the the magic word would still work with BT? or is that a dumb question |
Depends - are you just getting your telephone via "caller preference" (ie your line is still "run" by BT and you pay line rental to BT), or have they unbundled it? (You get billed by Tiscali for the line rental).
If it's the former, you can complain to BT and the service obligations apply. If it's the latter, you're screwed, basically. Your options are try and complain and get nowhere, or try and move to another provider and have a complicated process due to the unbundling where you *may* have to pay BT £100-odd to reconnect your line to BT as a "new" customer with a "new" line...
The unbundling situation in the UK is a real mess. You can't easily migrate to another ISP until your line is moved back to BT. If you are lucky, some ISPs may have a deal on offer where they pay the fees to BT if you agree to sign up for a minimum period. |

If you get your internet via ADSL, not cable, it means you already have it. You can't have more than one ADSL line on the same line. To change ADSL provider, they'd have to remove and add it back. It's been worded this badly for years.
If you don't get your internet via ADSL, then the most likely one is the DACS. This is a device used by BT to "share" one copper pair between you and the telephone exchange between 2 houses. You both pay full line rental, but in effect you only get half a telephone line. A bit like the old party lines!
Bandwidth tends to be dreadful, ADSL own't work on it, and most modems struggle too. To fix this, FAX is the magic word to use on BT again. A rather long piece is on wikipedia about it. It's more common out in the sticks. |

Our current ISP has a 1 month rolling contract (I think that's what you call it) but others make you sign your life away on 6, 12 or even 18 month contracts! What if they're rubbish after you sign on the dotted line? You're stuck!
I know there's usually a 'cooling off' period but how many problems make themselves know during this time?
|
There are still ISPs that offer 1 month rolling contracts. The usual penalty is that if you don't pay the connection charge, you'd have to pay it when leaving. |

Sadly we are billed to Tiscali AND we are tied in
OH checked everything you gave us and we can only get 1MB so paying for more is throwing money away. |

| And they were more than happy to suggest you throw more money away? Did they do that to you in writing? If so, you have a very strong bargaining chip... |

Local Loop Unbundling is where your ISP or telephone company takes over the copper wire between the telephone exchange and your house completely. You don't rent it from BT, you rent it from your ISP/telco instead.
It then never goes through BT equipment, and you are down to the ISP/telco for everything. If you get a fault on your line, your ISP/telco is responsible, not BT. BT will want to know nothing about your faults, and can't do anything about it.
It also means if you want to move ISP/telco, your line has to be moved from one telco to another. They may charge for this. For example, if you "unbundle" a line from BT and move to say, Tiscali, and later you want to move back to a BT line so you can get service from PlusNet or BT or whoever, you'd have to pay BT £100+ for a "new line", just as you would when moving into a new house!
I know the idea of LLU is to increase competition, but most of the action so far has been pretty uncompetitive and designed to make it very difficult and expensive to move ISPs and telcos at a later date. My father-in-law for example got "unbundled", and now if he wants to move to another ISP he's got to disconnect his ADSL line, then disconnect his telephone line, reconnect to BT, and then wait for a few days and get ADSL. If his line wasn't unbundled it'd happen in minutes on a fixed date and time with no loss of telephone or ADSL connectivity inbetween. |

In my initial posting above they suggest upgrading to 8Mb and yes it was via email. |

Well Steph after them ignoring my first email of complaint and failing to respond within 7 working days, I posted another further up the "chain of command" to the Manager who responded within 4 hours!
Can you believe he said exactly the same thing!
I have pointed out that it was not only confirmed by him and his staff about the stable 1MB bandwith, but also by BT (with a neighbour) and that they are in breach by suggesting that we should pay more for a service they cannot supply
We are actually tied into them for 18 months so I am hoping that they will let us go without penalty and I have cheekily asked that if BT request a fee to be linked back to them that Tiscali pay for it Well you have to try don't you! |
