As Tarka said just a touch of corn otherwise they'll eat the corn and not the layers ..........(corn just makes them fat..it's the layers which has all the goodness that they need).

Mixed corn is mostly wheat with a little maize, sometimes pea & barley. The main ingredient of layers pellets is wheat, so mixed corn will not make them fat - maize on it's own, also called corn will however make them fatter than they should be and shouldn't be fed on its own unless it's for finishing a meat bird.

It's a common mistake in this country Laughing (and on this forum) Maize is a relatively new crop to Britain and the term "Corn" was (and is) used to indicate grain - historiacally the locally grown one. I was working at a farm the other day and somebody said I'll go and get some corn and he came back with a scoop of cattle pellets Shocked

So corn to him meant the concentrate feed of whatever animal he was feeding.

as far as I am aware corn and maize are the same.

The other cereals are Barley, Buckwheat, Millet, Oats, Quinoa, Rice, Wild Rice, Rye, Spelt, Wheat.

There is a good information sheet on cereals here:

Maize is sweetcorn, or corn on the cob. but grown for feed it is allowed to mature on the plant and the sugars in the cobs which we find so delicious is converted to starch. I'm sure it's far more technical than that and somebody may be able to come on and explain it better, in chicken feed it it dried and kibbled, so in "mixed corn" it is the yellow bits.

As it is a plant in the sugar family it is, as I said earlier a relatively new crop to this country, as the growers had to "improve" the plant so it could grow in out cooler climate, and that is partially why there is such confusion over the name "corn". Commercial growers however will call it Maize, but the Americanization of our langugae results in us calling it "corn" as in sweetcorn & popcorn.

Wheat has been grown in this country for hundreds of years (if not more) and if your local organic shop don't know the differece between maize and wheat I would seriously doubt the credibility of anything they tell you. Laughing

Sorry - I think you're Irish, I don't know how extensively wheat was grown over there, the main grain crop was probably barley, but nevertheless, if somwbody doesn't know what wheat is, and they're selling it Shocked

You're right Itsybitsy, I was a bit nonplussed when he couldn't tell me the difference. It should be his business to know these things, though maize is not commonly available here. Wheat & barley are grown very widely here. Not sure about Maize though. I think it might be a little wet for large scale growing. Thanks for clearing it up guys. I am indeed Irish, by the way. Wink

As a child, Corn Flakes used to puzzle me because I couldn't see how it could possibly be corn (wheat).....much the same a cornflour (maizemeal), which was obviously not the same as the flour from which you made bread and cakes - it squeaked.
