Hallo all, here's an question.

If you buy a chicken (we'll assume reputable breeder etc) and the next morning it lays an egg I would assume that that egg is likely to be fertile. However, what I want to know is for how many days could that said chook be producing fertile eggs after she is separated from her hubby.

I'm off to buy some new girls next week and have a couple of broodies wondered how practical this idea was Smile

If she has been running with a cockerel, and he fancied her Laughing , then (so I have read) the sperm stays in the hen for up to 3 weeks.

Yes three weeks maximum - but you don't want to be setting eggs older than two weeks, if you follow. You can buy fertile eggs from ebay and local livestock markets, I think Horncastle do poultry, also Melton Mowbray, depending on which bit of Lincolnshire you are in, or advertise on here in the Poultry Mart.

Very Happy Thats great news It just adds to the fun of buying a few new hens. Knocks Tesco's 'buy one get one free' into the shade!!

I've just got to decide what to go for. I'm going to the newark agricultral show next Saturday. I didn't realise the markets did poultry.
