A significant amount of beef sold in pubs and restaurants as "local" or "British" actually comes from abroad, a BBC investigation has found.

DNA testing at 40 food outlets revealed 20% of samples taken from such labelled beef in south-west England was foreign.

and a threat to every animal in the country

The Government’s Animal Health agency have launched an investigation into the slip-up and are currently tracing the contaminated feed to farms and mills across the country.

Animals that have been fed on contaminated feed could face compulsory slaughter in compliance with EU regulation.

Not really a surprisewhen you look at the legislation - if it processed in the UK it can be described at Local!!!!!!!!!!

It should have much more restrictive labelling - but then it would cost more and people would not buy it - must have cheap food at all costs - despite the damage to UK farming!!!

Rant over - just enjoyed a lovley Bank Holiday here and also saw the news item and started to fume

Have a nice weekend!

I worked in the meat industry for many years and one of the things that used to really annoy me was when a restaurant made a great fuss over its "Scottishness" ie staff in tartan uniforms websites full of wonderful highland scenes etc. but they would then refuse to pay slightly more for top quality local produce. Some national chains even insisted on being supplied with foreign meat.
