Weeell, they are supoosed to be a mix of pure Welsummer and Welsummer x's (Sussex light, Bluebelle, Maran and Cream Legbar). One of the stripey ones definately came from a CLB egg cos I watched it hatch and was most bemused when it popped out looking like a Welsummer! The Maran eggs and 1 Warren egg didn't hatch (DIS) but there are 2 that look like SL x's and they don't have stripes. The others, although coming from different coloured eggs, all look like Welsummer chicks to me - be interesting to see what they turn out like . I did do some feather sexing at 2 days and there seemed to be 4 with even primary feathers (which I beleive are cockerels and if the colour sexing of the SL X is right then that tallies), 4 with uneven primarie and 2 with a mixture of both!!! One of my Brahma bantams has just gone broody so i am collecting a few Maran, Bluebelle and SL eggs to go under her (does 2 of each sound the right amount for her?). |

| Female CLB chicks are striped like Welsummer chicks, but the colour of the CLB is a bit duller. You could only tell this with the 2 different chicks side by side really. |

So, if you have pure Welsummers in there, too, you'll be able to see the difference. |

Lovely clear photo...I reckon the chick dead centre, not touching any other chick is the Wellie x CLB?

Flippin eck NannyP you've got good eyesight - how on earth can you tell the difference? I've compared them all and find that one of the stripy ones has slightly different colour down to the others.
Some time ago i got talking to a Welsummer breeder who told me you could sex Welsummers by the width of the stripe on the head wider stripes was one and narrower the other - unfortunately I can't remember which way round it was . Anyone else heard this?
The 2 Light Sussex X's are, I think, one of each - one is getting white/cream wing feathers and the other is much darker.
The photo was taken not long after I had taken the last 2 out of the incubator, I do have more and will post them when I can work out out to retrieve them from my photo files and put them into my new photobucket album. |

Yes there is supposed to be a way of sexing Welsummers by the stripes but I can't remember which way either, without looking it up.
It was in a past issue of PP magazine. |

| Last years Welsummer hatch, eggs from a friend not mine, produced 5 chicks - 4 with dark stripes and one with chocolate brown stripes, that one was Jacob the cockerel the rest were pullets. But it was the width of the stripes on the head this chap was talking about not the colour. This new hatch does have a difference - some are definately narrower than others. |
