Red insect question!

We are in the process of setting ourselves up to become chicken keepers. Today whilst tending the potatoes in our large half barrel, I found lots of red insects. I have freaked out as i know red mite is harmful to poultry. So, firstly, how do I know if these are red mites? Do I need to do anything about them before setting up our chicken house? If we DO have them in the garden, am I forever going to be battling them?

If they're in the garden then they're likely to be red spider mite - totally different to red mite. Wink

Someone previously posted pictures of the difference. Don't know if I can find it...
