Well it is all gradually progressing. The slow progress is due to having to demolish (carefully as there is some asbestos) the lean-to behind the stable and needing to build a new fence - all before we can get hens.

As for the stable it now has perches, the big window and the side door are wired up and animal proof. The side window has the perspex and is animal proof. Some of the small wall holes have been filled, a few to go. Most of the spider webs have gone (I wouldn't bother but they are huge, everywhere and I wanted to get rid of all the bits of hay). I have made a wire inner door and a proper wooden outer door. Creosoted the door today and now I have the smell of creosote stuck in my nose!

Until someone helps me at the weekend I can't do any more as the posts for the new lean-to and the fence need to go in next and I am too short and not strong enough to do it by myself. I'll be glad once it is all done and looking good!

I suppose the slow progress isn't too bad though as there don't appear to be any Dorking or Sussex available at this time of the year anyway so I suppose it saves some of the impatient waiting for those!

No updated pictures yet but I will get some soon. Not had any help so it hasn't progressed quickly. I got another 2 posts in today for the fence (I find the post rammer very difficult and heavy) while managing to stop the neighbour's compost heap from collapsing (it is up against and leaning on the old fence!). Nest box is made too.

A brief progress report (sorry, forgot to take photos again!).

Fence is built and almost completely chicken-wired.
Lean-to beams are all attatched and half the roof is on (put it up today in wind and rain). Building was light work after moving 20 trees earlier!

Nearly there... Hopefully can get the lean to done tomorrow and maybe even get a few hens this weekend or next!

Finished the lean to today Smile Still some stuff waiting to go back into it but the actual building work is done. Woo!

Finished the stable and now it is ready apart from being rather full of tools!

Now I need to find a time when my father can take me to get some hens (all sorts of transport problems at the moment).

I tried taking some pictures but my camera was being daft and I was too tired to sort it out. I will get some soon.

Hi,

Sorry, I have not taken any pictures yet. I will try to in the next few days but things are very busy here.

The hens are settling in great. I kept them shut in the stable for the first two days (so they knew where home was) and they are now allowed to free range all day. They have been well behaved Wink

They will all eat from my hand now and come when I call (one comes quickly, the other three slowly). One of them is really tame and greedy - she follows me around the place and tries to follow my brother when he is playing rugby in the field! She was standing on my shoulder earlier (I put her there as a joke and she just stayed).

No eggs yet but one of them has quite a large red comb, the other three have small pink ones still.

I have been kept thoroughly amused by them!

Susan
