Was going to do mine today but spent too much time watching the big girls getting to know their new sister a little Belgian.
Must do them tomorrow, spuds chitting at the moment, going to put them in bags again this year, can't remember who suggested (on the forum) but i've bought some rubble sacks to top up the old compost bags i've saved.
Poly tunnel done but need to fence off veggie patch or else all i'll have it pecked leaves |

The seed packets usually say when is the best time.
March/April for most things. Some, like sweetcorn, cucumber and tomato should already be sown indoors (oops I'm a tad behind there ) Some things it's better to sow a little at a time with a couple of weeks in between, like peas, lettuces and radishes.
I was waitng all March for the soil to dry out enough to put seeds in! Finally sowed some carrot seed yesterday as well as planting the first early potatoes. Must get the leeks, sprouts and dill out today before the weather turns again. I still need to plant broad beans and get the onion sets and shallots out but they aren't quite so finicky for soil condition, so I'll probably get them out next week, as long as it's not so cold that I don't want to go outside. |

With seeds, except for the REALLY hardy stuff like cabbages and brussels sprouts, I'd wait until the soil is warming up. Stuff that's started too early doesn't do as well as that which is started when the soil is warmed up, so it's worth waiting an extra couple of weeks |

You put your bare bum in contact with the soil. If it's too cold to be comfortable, then it's too cold for your seeds |

Think you're right about the carrot seeds et al, I put mine in two weeks ago and no sign yet at all. Put onions and scallions in at the same time and no sign either, how long before I see them poking thro?
Lettuce is growing though!

Just to let you know. Carrots are very difficult to grow. They take a long time to germinate - could be up to six weeks, by which time the weeds usually have started off. Its really hard to weed them when they are so small without damaging them. Best is to dig a trench and fill it with weed free soil.
Onions and shallots can be planted from sets as early as you want. I planted mine in January and are poking through now. From seed its a different story - the soil needs to be warm and powdery.
Just my two cents!!

Lettuce and tomato ready to pot on, 1st broad beans planted in loo roll inners, peppers about 1" high, carrot seed sown in guttering, spuds chitting nicely, spring onions sown but really slow to show.
Just realised we're going away for a week middle of May so i'll need to sort watering out, have water set on timer in polytunnel but need to get stuff planted and haven't got much time as some of my days off have been cancelled and i'm unlikely to get them back before I go on holiday |
