I realise this is probably a very naive question and marks me for the townie I certainly am, but just when do foxes come out? In the day time, or just at dusk/dawn, or all through the night?
I got a phone call at 5.30 a.m. this morning from my very concerned neighbour to say there was a fox on our gardens, she'd not realised all my hens were still tucked up in bed......
The coops are raised off the ground, and have rolled up chicken wire underneath. I make sure the hens are inside by dusk, and don't let them out until full light. (Into a run for most of the time. They get the full range of the garden when I'm working in it.) |

Foxes come out mostly at night but DO often come out during daylight.
I have had 3 or 4 fox attacks over the years and they have all occurred during the day (as the hens are in at night).
Around here foxes seem to only take chickens if it is there on a plate ie if the hens are walking around unprotected. They dont seem to bury under things etc
