Do Brahma chicks feather up quicker than other breeds? The 2 Brahma bantams i have will be 2 weeks on Friday and already have wing and tail feathers plus their feet/leg feathers are very long! I don't remember my other chicks being so well feathered at this age.

I have 2 brahma chicks hooray...and the older one has very fether legs already, whilst the one who is 2 days younger is not so feathered....and I think will always be so.
Must take some more photos today, meanwhile...this is a reminder of Shorts at 1 day old.
Okay, here's Shorts at 1 week
and his younger, by one day, sibling
I think Shorts might be a coq,,he seems "chunkier" than the 6 day old. |

Lovely photos, I haven't got any to post at the moment but these 2 chicks are 12 days on Friday and have got all their wing and most of their tail feathers. They are quite big too, they don't fit in my hand anymore, and their feet and legs have loads of feathers - just like mum . Noticed this morning that their breast feathers are just coming through - spoke to a friend who said it sounds as if i have 2 pullets as they feather quicker than cockerels - is this true????? Will try to get some photos soon.

I am in the process of hatching some brahma chicks(fingers crossed). It's my first attempt and boy does the time drag! But to help alleviate all the fretting i been doing,i decided my time would be better spent finding out as much as possible about them.
apparently the pullets do feather earlier than the coq. Also by examining the feathers on the wings can be a telltale sign. The primary feathers are the same length or shorter than the covert feathers on a male.Wheras the pullets primary feathers are distinctly longer.
This is a supposed reliable method of sexing larger fowls..........
Or it would be if i knew where the covert feathers are |

Thanks for that - you are not alone I don't know where the covert feathers are either! I must take some more phots - they are at the scruffy stage now but are still cute. Good luck with your hatch.

I got brahma large fowl at present. But i was shown some brahma bantams.I was wondering if they share the same placid, timid reputation of their large fowl cousins? Also i wonder if they woud mix ok. |

Hi Kinmad
I have two Brahma bantams and they mix just fine with the other hens ( all various breeds-Pekin,Australop,Wyandotte,Faverolle and Maran)
They are far from timid and very, very friendly. The youngest likes to sit on your welly if you stop still for even a moment. They aren't yet old enough to lay but would love some more as I think they are lovely, both in looks and temperement. |

Of course they're cute
They have different faces, even as they grow. We were looking at ours the other day, and felt that she had a hawk look about her.
Where are the photos |
