Hi,
One of the older chicks (approx 4 weeks old) plucked the feathers out of the back of a 2week old chick. Found it in the morning with sore skin.
Its hobbling about as it seems that it can't use one leg. Had a look at it and there is a blue mark - bruise?
She seems to use it a little bit now but its sticking out to the side. ive put her and one other chick separate so the rest don't keep jumping on her.
How do you know if its broken - anything i can do, don't want to cull, want to see if she will recover.

I wonder if the weight of the older chick attacking the younger one caused the leg to splay? Might be worth trying "splinting" the legs using some sticky-plaster for a couple of weeks.
I'm guessing this would also help in the case of a simple "green stick" type of fracture ... |

| Use a cotton bud as a splint (cut down to size) and cover any sore or red area with some purple spray to stop the pecking. Keeping older and younger chicks together is a bit risky. |

| The only answer may be to cull the feather pecker or put in some millet sprays to give it something else to do. |

Sakib,
Please go to the top of the page and see in the blue writing 'search'. Type in the word Splint, then below on the left it asks what forum you would like, move it to poultry clinic (where we are now), and loads of advice comes up, with all sorts of recomendations and links. Its best for you to look yourself, that way hopefully you will find the suggestions that you feel most appropriate etc...
however I found this link, which seemed helpful.
I hope your little chick is going to recover. x |
