Does anyone use a steam cleaner to controll red mite, do you think the steam would be hot and powerful enough to kill them.
Been experimenting today with my steam iron and think it might work but not convinced . |

My neighbour has terrible problems with red mite and regularly steam clean their henhouse - and still the blighters come back. They don't get anywhere with most of the chemicals either
I use diatom everytime I clean out and haven't had any problems [hurridly touches wood] yet.

| My OH bought me an a high pressure steam washer and it works well so long as you are incredibly thorough and do it a second time a week later. After that a good coating of creosote inside and out and all is well......until you find the blighters in another house. Minor outbreaks I deal with by wielding the creosote brush! |

Are you talking about actual Steam Cleaners or standard coldwater pressure washers that can be bought from Halfords etc?
I know some people think that pressure washers are steam cleaners, if its only a pressure washer that I need then I have one in the garage thats all! |

The one my neighbour uses is a steam cleaner - they have it for dis-infecting their horse lorry etc. You do not want to be on the wrong end of the lance

Since i first asked about steam cleaners I have bought one and love it. I dont think you can eradicate red mite with it but its definitely keeping them under controll better than any chemical I've used in the past, and apart from the electricity it runs on water. If i have the time i can use it every day and not worry about the cost or the effect on the birds as they can go into the house as soon as i'm out. The boiling hot steam is the only thing I've found that will kill the just out of the egg stage and this is when I think you need to get them, before they feed and lay their own eggs, which only takes a week. I am well pleased with it and the results so far
Its also brilliant in the house for doing floors, you dont need any thing like Flash to get a lovely bright clean floor and its almost dry as soon as its finished.
I love it, anyone in need of a steam clean just call by |

This one from Lakeland Simac® Steam Cleaner
I tried to do a link but it wouldn't work
Before I bought it I phoned them and asked if they had any info on killing red mite with it. They hadn't, but said they would speak to the makers and within half an hour had called me back. They had got info on redmites and they said the makers thought it would work well but if after a good trial I didn't think it was doing the job they would take it back and refund my money.
I had found it £10 cheaper on another site but thought it worth going with lakeland. I placed the order over the phone about 4.00 in the afternoon and it came lunch time next day. |

It looks a bit tame compared to the industrial one my neighbour has - but if it works

Edited to add: looks like my link won't work either |
